SCOUTS CONTINUED TO ACHIEVE RANK ADVANCEMENT IN 2020 WITH VIRTUAL MERIT BADGES & VIRTUAL STEM NOVA COURSES!

Scouts, both Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA, were able to continue achieving rank advancement during the pandemic in 2020 by completing virtual Merit Badges and virtual STEM NOVA courses! Covering topics such as Cooking, Public Health, Citizenship in the World, Scouting Heritage and more, Scouts were able to continue their Scouting adventure despite being on lock-down due to COVID-19. In 2020, 612 merit badges, 150 Cub Scout NOVA’s and 90 Scouts BSA NOVA’s were earned by our virtual programs!

The Dan Beard Council, BSA was one of the leaders in creating virtual content for our Scouts, in which, we paved the way for other Councils across the nation who were also able to share our programs virtually with their Scouts and volunteers. Check out more about virtual Scouting here.

Below are just a few of the merit badges that were offered virtually in 2020. Most of these merit badges are not typically held virtually. For example, for the First Aid merit badge, Scouts had to make videos of themselves demonstrating the First Aid requirements.

SCOUTING IN ACTION

Scouts do amazing things. These young men and women dedicate their time and energy in order to help others and serve their community with a multitude of service projects each year. Below are just a handful of ways our Scouts gave back to their community by creating a service project that demonstrates how a Scout truly lives by the Scout Law by being trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

Local Eagle Scout Transforms a Courtyard with a New Outdoor Sensory Path for Local School

Mason Early Childhood Center has a newly revitalized courtyard with a new outdoor sensory path courtesy of Dan Beard Council, BSA Scout, Adam W., from Troop 750 of Heritage Presbyterian Church in Mason, Ohio with over 1,200 volunteer hours. Adam created an astroturfed area that includes a 10-station sensory path, outdoor seating, butterfly garden, rock garden and new Tether Ball game. Adam led a group of Scouts that spend over 500 hours in the clean-up and construction of the courtyard, plus another 750 hours of planning and transporting materials. Last year after a rain shower, the students would have to walk the hallways for recess, and now they can immediately use the astroturfed area to play outside for recess. Read more…

One of the First Female Eagle Scouts in the Inaugural Class Creates Signage & a Garden for Veterans

Greater Cincinnati teen Renee Bauer, of Troop 1974 chartered by West Chester Nazarene Church, made history on January 13, 2021 when she became one of the nation’s first female Eagle Scouts – a prestigious achievement attained by some of the country’s most noteworthy figures. Renee Bauer is among hundreds of young women who will make up the Inaugural Class of female Eagle Scouts. Renee completed her Eagle Scout project at the St. Joseph American Legion, Post 464, in Brookville, Indiana. She identified a lack of on-road signage for this Post in her community and she used this inspiration to form a proposal. She also included landscaping by the Post’s front entrance by adding greenery and rocks to showcase the sign. The project was dedicated with members of the American Legion and Renee on September 11, 2020. Read more…

Local Scout Creates Retired American Flag Drop Box at Miami Township Police Department

Local Scout Theo W., who is a part of Scouts BSA Troop 468 of Trinity United Methodist Church in Milford, Ohio, was thinking about what type of service project he should complete while working towards the rank of Eagle Scout within the Blue Jacket District of the Dan Beard Council, Boy Scouts of America, when he saw a sponsored retired American Flag drop box when traveling. He ran the idea past his Assistant Scoutmaster Mrs. Barringer and his Scoutmaster Rob Salvucci who helped guide him on his project. The box was originally going to be a wooden box but decided that a weatherproof vinyl unit would work nicely. Unsure of where to put the retired American flag drop box, Theo met with Chief Mike Mills of Miami Township Police Department. Chief Mills put Theo in contact with Miami Township Police Department Lieutenant Ted Swain who guided placement to under the overhang beside the main Police Department door. After receiving approval on this Eagle Scout project idea from his Scoutmasters, Theo began the designing, planning and building of his project. Read more…

SILVER BEAVER AWARD

The Silver Beaver Award is bestowed upon only those persons who have given continued, unselfish, and effective service to the community, usually through the program of the Boy Scouts of America, but not limited to Scouting. Because Scouters may not nominate themselves for this award, only those persons who have been nominated by their Scouting peers are considered. The Silver Beaver Award is the highest recognition the Dan Beard Council can bestow upon its volunteer leaders.
